International Friendship Weekend in Ayslford

The annual Esperanto friendship weekend in the Friars monastery, Aylesford, Kent took place between the 14th and 18th October organised by Terry and Anica Page. In total there were 16 visitors and I hope that they all enjoyed the event as much as I did. The weather was a bit mixed - cold in the evenings but mostly dry and sunny. The accommodation was basic but comfortable and the meals excellent. From the railway station to the monastery was only a twenty minute walk.

The theme of the weekend was "lose and losing things" in its widest sense and each person had his or her experiences to share, some amusing and some less so. The programme included language exercises, card and guessing games plus musical contributions, a discussion about the role of parents in their children's education, Desert Island Discs, a talk about stamp collecting, an afternoon walk and a talk about fluorine in our water system. We were also introduced to the art of Japanese calligraphy and were able to practise the art ourselves - which made me glad that I chose Esperanto and not Japanese with more ink on my hands than on the paper!

Yes, all this between Friday evening and Monday lunchtime! This was my first visit and I can thoroughly recommend the weekend to any other Esperanto speakers at whatever level to enjoy the experience at the next friendship weekend planned for 23rdSeptember 2011. I have already put the dates in my diary.

Ek de la 1980-aj jaroj, esperantistoj kunvenas aŭtune en Kent por partopreni en la "Internacia Amikeca Renkontiĝo" ĉe "The Friars", ĉarma iama monaĥejo kiu ankoraŭ estas Karmelana (t.e. religia) komunumo, sed nun ankaŭ servas kiel konferencejo. La "ĉarmo" datiĝas de 1242 do la ejo ne provizas ĉiun modernan luksaĵon, tamen kiel ejo por tranokti, manĝi kaj renkonti ĝi ja taŭgis - precipe kiam adaptemaj partoprenatoj kiel ni esperantistoj povas trovi alternativajn solvojn de okazaj malfacilaĵoj aŭ mankoj.

La kunsidon ĉi-jare (oktobro 2010) lerte organizis Anica kaj Terry Page, kiun vigla kaj varia programo, en kiu ĉiuj kontribuis aŭ partoprenis. Malgraŭ la kunventitolo, ĉi-jare ĉiuj el la 16 partoprenantoj vojaĝis nur el Anglio, tamen tri originale devenas el pli foraj landoj, kaj aliaj parolis pri siaj spertoj ekster Britio, do ni ja ĝuis internacian kaj interkulturan etoson. Tra la tutaj tagoj kaj vesperoj, Esperanto aŭdiĝis kaj dum la laŭprogramaj sesioj kaj dum la manĝo- kaj kafo-paŭzoj, do Esperantio ja venis al Kent dum tiu semajnfino.

Inter la riĉaj kaj buntaj programeroj, Roy Simmons prezentis eksponon de Esperantaj poŝtmarkoj, Sally Phillips parolis pri siaj vojaĝoj kaj, kiun Peter Bolwell, distris nin muzike. Terry Page streĉis nian lingvoscion per ekzercoj, Ivor Hueting intervjuis Anan Montesinos pri ŝiaj "izol-insulaj diskoj", kaj Kimie Markarian instruis nin pri la Japana skribsistemo.

Dum freŝa tamen suna posttagmezo ni eksursis al loka arbokolekto "Cobtree Manor Park" por ĝui la aŭtunajn kolorojn. Dum promeno tie ni hazarde spertis unu el la programaj temoj - "Perdiĝo" - tamen dank' al la direkto-senso de "homa birilo" Sally Philliips, ni retrovis la aŭtoparkejon kaj re-atingis "The Friars" ĝustatempe por ricevi teon kaj kukon.

Entute, la evento estis tre ĝuinda semajnfino, en bela brita pejzaĝo, kaj kun stimula programo de Esperantaj diskutoj, prezentoj, distraĵoj kaj ludo.
