Although the University has not been able to appoint a Lecturer in Esperanto this year, nevertheless they wish to offer the prestigious John Buchanan Prize.
The candidates are required to present an original essay of at least 1,000 words on one of three offered subjects, and a translation passage of not less than 500 words into Esperanto.
The staff of the University's Department of Modern languages is "leaning over backwards" to keep Esperanto as a viable subject at Liverpool.
Applications for details should be sent to the Registrar, The University of Liverpool, P.O.B. 147, Liverpool L69 3BX. The prize is £150. I shall be marking the papers, which must be in by 1st May.
I have only just been informed by the University that they wish to offer the prize, which is very short notice indeed. The winner will be announced in the University's House journal.

In the past year a new law was introduced to add Esperanto to the existing seven accredited foreign languages recognised by the state education system. Esperanto has already been used in telephone books, railway timetables, university courses, etc., but this is a significant leap forward in state recognition of the value of Esperanto.
This means that students can learn the language and its history and take examinations for university entry. As students cannot receive a high school or university diploma unless they have passed examinations in one or two foreign languages, this new law could give a strong boost to Esperanto in Hungary.

En Slovakio estis facile interkompreniĝi. Mi ege ekŝatis kelkajn Slovakajn Ĉevojajn skribaĵojn. k.e. pot raviny, okres, zmarzlina. Komplikaĵoj komenciĝis nur en Hungario. La bezono de internacia lingvo estis vere sentebla. Mi nenion komprenis kaj devis eĉ kelkfoje halti por trovi manĝejon; nur "gurniservis" estis por mi komprenebla. Mi komencis kredi al mia bonŝanco en Hungario nur rimarkinte surstrate grandan E-grupon kompreneble estis IJS-anoj.
La aranĝo okazis en Agrikultura Altlernejo. Alvenis partoprenantoj el 17 landoj, kune ĉ 100 personoj. Estis multaj ekskursoj. i.a al Tokaj kun vingustumado, al zoologia ĝardeno kaj keramikfabriko.
Tamen la plej amuziga estis la mia opinio akvobatalo. Ĝi komenciĝis ĉe akvofontano en centro de la urbo. Ni dividiĝis je du grupoj kaj batalis je sukeraĵoj. Neniu restis seka. Tre bone batalis rusaj fraŭlinoj. La plej malsekaj ricevis naĝhelpilojn. Revenante ni haltis ĉe la "grava konstruaĵo" por malsuprenigi E-flagon kaj kanti E-himnon. Post kelkaj kantvortoj iu komencis ege laŭte kanti "La bamba". Tiumomente la esperantistaro ekvigliĝis rapidege, faris rondon, kantis kaj kisis kiel kutime. Tiumaniere fondiĝis nova himno de Esperanto "La bamba". Hungaraj spektantoj tre ridis pro nia amuziĝo kaj verŝajne nenion komprenis. Poste, antaŭ la lernejo jam atendis nin granda fajrobrigadista veturilo kun profesiaj akvobatalistoj. Ili okupis strategian punkton ĉe enirpordoj kaj forte akvagadis nin, perpiedan akvoarmeon. Tamen kelkaj sukcesis suprengrimpi la aŭton.
Kadre de la aranĝo okazis ankaŭ esperanta edziĝfesto de Katalin kaj Norbert Piechotta (Pola Esperanta Junularo gratulas!'!) en evangelika preĝejo. Estis ĵetado de floroj, moneroj kaj klaksonado laŭ hungara kutimo, kaj la balo kompreneble
Vere tre rida programo, hungaraj dancoj, prelegoj, astrologo, sorĉistino ktp.

I would like to begin creating an Esperanto version of the international labour news website 'LabourStart which I founded in 1996.
'LabourStart', located at http://www.labourstart.org/ is probably the most heavily trafficked of the global trade union websites. By December 2000 it was reaching more than 53,000 unique users per month. The core of the site is a database of links to news stories on the web about trade unions and working people. Those links are collected and posted to the site by a global network of volunteer correspondents - now over 90 trade union activists based on every continent - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Until now, though some of the links pointed to stories in languages other than English, the site was entirely in English. A Dutch language version will be available shortly (http://www. labourstart.org/nl/) and Spanish and French versions are expected later in the year.
I am aware that there is very little online labour news available in Esperanto - indeed, there is very little news of any kind in Esperanto available on the web, let alone labour news. What I thought about doing is using a powerful new technology called web logging to create an easy way for me - and eventually others - to publish brief news items which will be, essentially, translations into Esperanto of new headlines which have already, appeared among the top news items of the day in English on LabourStart. (On average, there is one such new headline each day, selected from the dozens of stories posted.) I've done a prototype of this and apologize for the undoubtedly poor Esperanto, but you can see it here - http://www.labourstart.org/
I'm a brand new member of EAB and it's no doubt presumptuous of me to begin my membership in this way, but my Esperanto isn't yet good enough to do the work on this myself. I'm prepared to do most of the work, though collaborators are certainly welcome, but what I urgently need is volunteers who know Esperanto well to help correct the short texts I'll be posting.

This book is a translation by Professor Humphrey Tonkin of a book originally published in 1965 by J Regulo, in Esperanto. It is an attractive hardback, clearly printed (in reasonably sized print), and including eight pages of photographs. The book contains almost 300 pages, the translation itself containing 209 pages. Both sons write forewords to the translation. According to Paul Soros, this English translation will give "Maskerado" "a wider audience". What would the pioneers of Esperanto make of that? However, the translation is certainly easy to read; sentences tend to be short and the style is clear. The English is American, so we find words such as "streetcar" and usual American spellings are found, rumor, labor and so on. A pronunciation guide to Hungarian would have been useful, Hungarian orthography being different from ours.
The afterword, in which Professor Tonkin provides a fascinating study of both the book and of Soros, is best left to the end. However, the copious and excellent notes which follow the afterword are best read chapter for chapter with the account itself. The narrative is understated, yet compelling, as Soros plans to disguise and protect his family, and others, within the Christian community. He, as a lawyer, must reconcile lawbreaking with his own morality. He condemns the Jewish Council for their short-sighted eagerness to co-operate with the anti-semitic authorities. He urges fellow Jews not to trust to agreements made with people in power. He is a pragmatist who takes from the rich but who often gives to the poor, an arrangement which benefits everyone.
What is never stated is that this blending into the Christian society could not have been a universal solution. Many Jews had to be visible victims in order for those in hiding to succeed. However this tale is a concrete account of what happened, of what was necessary. There is the minimum introspection; what had to be done, had to be done. Throughout the book, one senses that Soros always expects to survive. There is an optimistic quality to his thought which is a pleasure to experience. This enables a book such as this, a book about suffering, to be an enjoyable read. And that, in itself, is disquieting. Here is a cultured, well-educated man forced into a criminal underworld because of his race.
This is a warning to us all. Think of Yugoslavia, think of Rwanda. Imagine Britain without laws against racial harassment and ask whether we can be complacent. This book depicts good amidst evil, the way in which some people retain their humanity in a world gone mad. It is a warning and yet an inspiration.

The report under my name on page 11 of the January 2001 issue was an edited version of what I wrote and contained several errors I did not make:-

"After receiving a brush-off from Neil Kinnock, he changed his mind" (This should be: "After Neil Kinnock, Commissioner for Language Diversity, had decided not to recognise the value of Esperanto, he changed his mind because the EU- supported Bureau for Lesser Used Languages urged me to campaign among MEPs.")

Mr Person writes in to say that there is another radio broadcasting in Esperanto which is worthwhile to listen to. Members who took part in the British Congress at Saffron Walden in 1996 and went on an excursion to Roy Threadgold's Boydell Farm, will be saddened to learn that it became infected. All the 500 sheep, goats and a lama (which had been about to give birth) have had to be killed. What makes it the more sad is that Roy did not keep animals to rear for meat but to produce milk and ice cream. Therefore the infection didn't come as a result of transport of live animals but was either windborne or brought in by a milk tanker. The farm had been quite a showplace and I'm sure that all members will sympathise with Roy at this time.

Se vi ĉeestis la jarkunvenon de la Esperanto Asocio de Britio, ĉijare en Appleby-in-Westmorland dum la paska semajnfino, vi sendube havas bonajn memoraĵojn pri tre bonorganizita aranĝo en belega loko. Vi ankaŭ memoros la ĝuindajn distraĵojn kaj ekskursojn. Do vi certe povus imagi ke post tio, La Morecambe Bay Esperanto Societo, kies membraron aranĝis la eventon, meritus sufiĉe longan periodon de ripozo ĉu? Tute ne! Kontraŭe, ili ankaŭ aranĝis eksterordinaran ekskurson per kanalboato 'Lady Fiona" dum sabato la 28-a de oktobro.
La krozo ekkomencis je la 2a horo ptm. Kvankam vendrede estis kvazaŭ somera tago kiam mi en Lancaster alvenis, varmis kaj sunis, tute sen vento, homoj eĉ sunbruniĝis ĉe la apuda Morecambe promenejo, veterprognozo por sabato tamen estis sufiĉe aĉa. Do, ni ĉiuj 17 personoj alvenis al la kanalkajo, bone preparita por kiu ajn ke la ĉielo povus sur ni ĵeti, kvankam estis ankoraŭ sufiĉe varma kaj kalma. Eĉ sunis de tempo al tempo, sed ni "ĝuis" kelkajn pluvduŝojn dum la daŭro de la krozo sur fama Lancaster Kanalo. Plejparte tamen estis sufiĉe komforta kaj seka por resti ekstere por pli bone vidi la multajn diversspecajn arbojn kaj birdojn dum ke ni silente preterglitis la kanalbordojn kaj admiris la ĉiam belajn vidindaĵojn. Unu el la plej plezuraj spertoj je la kanaloj estas la paco kaj trankvileco de la kamparo tra kiu oni vojaĝas. Nia boato, "Lady Fiona" komencis antaŭ ĉirkaŭ 150 jarojn ŝian vivon kiel karboportisto inter la karbominejoj kaj Lancaster. konstruita de nitita fero, 75 futojn longe kaj 13 futojn larĝan, ŝi estas la unusola restanta boato tiuklase. Se hodiaŭ la unuaj posedantoj revenis, ili ĝin certe ne rekonos. Nun ĝi estas luksa krozboato, tegmentita, provizita de komfortaj seĝoj kaj tabloj, Larĝaj fenestroj, necesejoj kaj eĉ bone stokita trinkejo! teo kaj kafo ankaŭ rapide haveblas de la multetalentata ŝipanaro. Libroj kun fotagrafaĵoj pri la historio de la boato dum ke ŝi laboris, ĝis la emeritiĝo kiel portanto de turistoj troviĝas surŝipe. Ege interesaj - ni ĉiuj avide legis ilin kaj miris.
Nia krozo finis post tio kiu ŝajnis al ni nur kiel duon horon, sed fakte, ĝi daŭris ne malpli ol tri horojn! Aparte interesa, estis kiam post horo kaj duono, kiam ni atingis sufiĉe larĝan sekcion de la kanalo, la ŝipanaro devis turni la boaton por reveni hejmen li turnis ĝin mane ek de la kanalbordoj, tra la 360 gradojn per bruta forto.
Dum ke ni krozadis, ni estis iomete de la vetero ŝirmitaj, sed kiam ni elŝipiĝis, rimarkinda malpliboniĝo evidentiĝis. Feliĉe, en apuda hotelo estis aranĝita ampleksa bufeda manĝado. Poste, D-rino Marjorie Boulton gastparolis. La temo estis "La Mirakla Mikrokosmo". Tiu mikrokosmo estas pri Esperanto tra la mondo, kaj kiel pere de nia lingvo. ne nur etnaj kaj nacilingvaj diferencoj malaperas, sed ankaŭ profesiaj kaj klasaj diferencoj. kie ajn oni tion spertas? Marjorie ankaŭ kompanis internaciajn (ne-Esperantajn) konferencojn kun niaj Universalaj Kongresoj. Ĉe la unua, oni nur provizata de kaporeliloj, eblas aŭdi angla-lingvan interpreton pri tio kiu okazas. I thought I might comment about Esperanto from the point of view of a newcomer. I appreciate the wonderful effort that Esperantists put into "spreading the word" but the way that Esperanto is promoted (brochures in books, magazines at the laundrette) is very similar to the promotion of religious cults. It's a bit off-putting to see "Popola Ĉinio" stacked right alongside Jehovah's Witness pamphlets at the laundrette!. When I got on the Internet and found some Esperanto sites, there was nothing to allay my fears. There was some mention of the usefulness of Esperanto when travelling, but much of the discussion was about promoting Esperanto: that scary "Esperanto Movement." You'd never see talk about promoting Chinese on a "Learn Chinese" website, would you? From the point of view of a newcomer, anything as useful as Esperanto claims to be, shouldn't have to promote itself.
Of course, I personally feel that Esperanto is a wonderful language and that it should be spoken by absolutely everybody! And I knew enough about it in advance to not be scared off by discussion of the "Esperanto Movement." I only realized how other people viewed Esperanto when I tried to talk friends and family into joining me on a free course. Reactions raged from believing that Esperanto was a religious cult or a political party to insinuating that anything free couldn't possibly be worthwhile, or indeed, really "free." I think many of them are suspicious of the mail-order aspect of most Esperanto courses.
So what would I suggest? Have members of EAB tried teaching Esperanto in more traditional venues, like university clubs and evening adult education classes? (For all I know, this has been going on for years, but there aren't any in Milton Keynes!
I think that many people would be interested in a language that they could learn passably in a ten- or fifteen-session course. But the really exciting part would be to follow the course with a trip to visit a matched group of beginning Esperantists in Europe. Our local newspaper runs weekly bus trips to many beautiful European destinations for £79 to £99 for four days, including hotel and breakfast, so this could be inexpensive without even staying at the hosts' homes.
I'm sure "ordinary" (i.e. not yet members of the Esperanto Movement!) British students would appreciate having a goal: going abroad and being able to communicate in a foreign language once they arrived. And they would get even more practice when they had their turn at hosting the European group. Wouldn't this beat staying taking a mail-order course and dreaming vaguely of someday joining "Pasporta Servo"? This would also prove Esperanto's utility right from the start.
By the way: I got the idea of a class trip from when I trained to be a scuba diver in Michigan (USA). Our certification classes were immediately followed by a dive trip to Florida, and if we hadn't had this experience, I'm sure most of us Michigan divers wouldn't have continued diving after the original course. But once we saw the fun of diving in the tropics, I'm sure that's why many of us continued with it. (I eventually went on to dive in four countries).

Stan Cullis who has just died at the age of 85 will be known to quite a few of our older members, He was one of the few footballers to enjoy success as both player and manager of the same club; he was an imposing centre-half for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1930s. His interest in Esperanto spanned a long time and he was a keen user of it.
A warning has just been put out that Nigerian confidence tricksters are now operating using Esperanto. It is the same old gambit. Some guy has the odd million or so dollars and, poor soul, needs to get it out of his country but doesn't have a bank account in Britain. So would you, dear gullible friend, help him out by sending your bank account details so that he can transfer this vast sum into your account. Later he will take it out and recompense you with a quarter of a million or so. Beware! Transfer of money will take place, but not into your account but out of it! If you get any offers like this, or any appeals to help in a good cause which you don't already know about, consult U.E.A.
Esperanto Castle Undergoing Renovation. The small country castle Gresillon in western France, where intensive live-in Esperanto courses have been taught in summertime for many years, was forced to close its doors a few years ago due to more stringent safety codes. A worldwide effort to raise funds for the needed maintenance is bearing fruit. Just one year after the sudden closure, enough of the ground floor was brought up to standard to allow classes to be held there, as long as guests slept elsewhere in the village. For the summer season of 2000, the first floor was ready for guests, so the "live-in" experience of total immersion in Esperanto is once again available. There is still much to be done to bring the whole castle up to standard, but with generous support from throughout the world it is happening bit by bit.
In a letter in the last issue of EAB-Update a reader asked for articles about happenings in the world, about the floods, world affairs, etc. Several have replied to this saying that there already exist two excellent magazines which are pleased to print this kind of article if someone will write them and send them to the editors. The magazines are Monato and La Ondo. In particular the editor of La Ondo would like to have more articles written by his English readers. Helga Rapley makes the point that "The vast majority of Esperantists are 'true cosmopolitans' who are quite capable of holding conversations on various topics. Possibly this is because they read publications such as La Ondo, which is not exclusively Russian or East European, but contains articles by anyone who cares to send one in, including myself, a '7-landa persono', who speaks five languages and has a smattering of others. Monato is not concerned with the movement or the language as such, but covers the whole range of human life, culture, travel, politics, geography, etc. For family life in the whole world, there is an Esperanto Association for parents and children. These and all other fakaj organizoj and publications are listed in the Yearbook of UEA - one can hardly expect EAB to deal with such varied international affairs and cater for all tastes! if the plunge is taken into REAL, not marginal Esperanto activities, one would not suffer from a lack of practice nor find it boring.

Motherwell, la elektita loko, por la Skota Kongreso de la 4a ĝis la 7a de majo 2001, antaŭe estis la centro de la skota ŝtalindustrio kaj mondfama pro peza inĝeniarado. La industria bazo nun estas multe pli variigita; kaj la urbo situas sur la rando de la kamparo.
Motherwell estas facile atingebla de Anglio per trajno kaj aŭtobuso kaj konvene troviĝas inter la flughavenoj glasgova kaj edinburga.
La Kongreso okazos en la Bentley Hotelo, iama domego de ŝtalestro, nur 2 minutojn piede de la stacidomo. La hotelo havas bonegan reputacion pri la kuirarto skota kaj internacia kaj partoprenontoj povos komforte resti tie je modera kosto. Skotaj viskioj abundas en la baro; kaj la kongreso okazos en nova konferencejo en la hotelo kun modernaj ekipaĵoj.
La kongresa temo estos la industria historio kaj heredaĵo de la graflando Lanark en kiu Motherwell situas, kun specifaj aludoj al enmigrintoj kiu tiom kontribuis al la disvolviĝo de Motherwell kaj la graflando. Homoj venis el Irlando, Litovio, Italio, Ukrainio kaj aliaj landoj; kaj nun estas forta kontribuo de pakistananoj kaj ĉinoj. La arkitekture elstara Heredaĵo-Centro apudas la kongresejon kaj estas vizitinda. Krome oni iros al loka industria muzeo kaj interesa centro kiu pritraktos la universalan temon de pilgrimado.
Estos forta kultura flanko dum la Kongreso: Aleksandro Danko, Ruslando/Ukrainio akordionos kaj estos muzikaj kontribuoj apartenantaj al diversaj enmigrintaj tradicioj. Espereble, la alia eksterlanda gasto estos el Niĝerio.
La prelega programo estos diversa kaj rilatos al la kongresa temo. Prelegtemoj inkluzivos: Temara Super-rigardo kaj Analizo; Keir Hardy, la unua proleta brita parlamentano, kiu naskiĝis en la urbo; la Industria Geografio de la Graflando; Rilatoj inter Skotlando kaj Italio; kaj Amuzaj Renkontiĝoj en Esperantujo.
Lundon oni ekskursos por ekrigardi la relative nekonatan sudon de la graflando Lanark kie historio kaj pejzaĝo agrable intermiksiĝas. Vi surpriziĝos!

Tre plaĉis al Horace aparte fari spritaĵojn pri instruistoj. Jen ekzemplo:
Inspektoro vizitis lernejon kaj eniris klasĉambron; li decidis testi la religian scion de la lernantoj, kaj demandis: "Kiu detruis la muregojn de Jeriko?" Nenia respondo. Do li fingromontris al knabo en la unua vico kaj ripetis: "Kiu detruis la muregojn de Jeriko?"
"N-n-n-ne estis mi, sinjoro!"
La inspektoro sin turnis al la instruistino kaj diris, "Ĉu vi aŭdis tion?" Kaj la instruistino respondis, "Jes, kaj mi povas certigi vin, ke tiu knabo estas honesta, kaj, mi firme kredas, ke ne estas li, kiu detruis ilin.".
La inspektoro rapidis al la oficejo de la lernejestro kaj rakontis al li pri la afero. La lernejestro respondis, ke li bone sciis, ke tiu instruistino konas la lernantojn, kaj ke, li ankaŭ kredas, ke la knabo estas senkulpa. La inspektoro miris pri la afero kaj, je la venonta mateno, vizitis la edukad-oficejo kaj rakontis al la direktoro pri la vizito al la lernejo. "Kion vi intencas fari pri tio?" li demandis. "Ho!" respondis la direktoro, "Ne vin ĝenu pri tio - mi ordonos la konstru-fakojn rekonstrui la muregojn!"
Tipa Horace Barks' ŝerco!
Vilĉjo Aŭld, al kiu Horace estis tre simpatia, skribis ke Horace servis kun la 5a Norda Stafordŝira Regimento. Li estis dufoje vundita en Francio. Vilĉo - kvankam li normale ne ŝatas traduki eltiraĵojn - plenigis la peton de Horaco, kiel li ĉiam nomis lin, traduki "Antaŭ Batalo" el Henriko 5a de Ŝekspiro. Vilĉjo eldonis la paroladon en La Brita Esperantisto kaj aldonis la vortojn: "La traduko estas dediĉita al la brava soldato de L'Unua Mondmilito, urbestrano, kaj ornamo de l'trinkejo 'Verda Stelo': Horaco Barks".
Kiam li malsaniĝis dum la lastaj monatoj, Horaco kaj Vilĉjo korespondis. Ili surbendigis mesaĝojn. Jen estas la vortoj el la lasta de Vilĉjo. Vilĉjo parolas pri diversaj interesaj aferoj inlduzive pri siaj familio kaj antaŭuloj, pri Esperanto kiel la miraklo de la moderna mondo, kaj li ankaŭ deklamas tiun scenon el akto 4 de Henriko 5a. La eltiraĵo komencas per aludo pri la morto de Louis Beaŭcaire:
"Estis kompreneble tre kamaradece peti ĉe Sankta Petro, ke li prenu vin anstataŭ nian amikon, Louis. Tamen. en la pesilo de la justeco kaj la valoro, laŭ mia opinio, vi estas por esperanto almenaŭ sama valora kiel Louis. Kompreneble ankaŭ mi funebris kiam mi aŭdis pri lia tro frua morto; ankaŭ mi estas granda admiranto de liaj verkoj, kaj fakte mi elektis unu el la fabeloj de La Verda Pigo por mia Nova Krestomatio, pri kiu mi parolis antaŭ nelonge.
Se mi rigardas vian esperantan vivon mi trovis ĝin mirinda, mirinda. Eĉ vi instruas al mi, ĉar vi skribis al Charlie Chester [komediisto-Ed], menciante Esperanton, pri tiu volumo de homoj en milito, kaj vi diris al mi, ke ni devas uzi tiajn rimedojn por disvastigi la scion pri Esperanto. Vi tute pravas. Kaj multaj homoj kiel mi ne volonte preteratentas tiajn eblecojn.
Mi estas tro enfermita en miajn proprajn rondojn, ĉu ne? Kaj mi persone ne konas tre multajn eks-urbestrojn, kiuj aranĝis kursojn ĉiujare en kolegio [Barlaston-Ed], kursojn en la lokaj cirkonstancoj, havigis al vi propran trinkejon, havigis stratojn kun la nomoj 'Esperanto' kaj 'Zamenhof; homoj, kiuj organizis tiom da internaciaj renkontiĝoj, ktp, ktp.
Mi tiel admiras vian esperantistan aktivecon, kaj mi ĉiam sentas min humila, kiam mi regardas al viaj atingoj, kaj al via kuraĝo ĝuste en niaj esperantistaj kampoj. Mi komentas kun Sankta Petro, ke estas ankoraŭ tro frue forpreni vin el niaj vicoj. Estis ankaŭ iom frue forpreni Louis Beaucaire kompreneble. Nia nuna konversacio, ekzemple, montras la miraklon de Esperanto. Ĉu vi konstatas, ke, sen Esperanto, ni, samlandanoj tutsimple ne konus unu la alian. Ĝi estas miraklo de la moderna mondo; nome, Esperanto estas, ĉu ne? Ni havas tiom da nekredeblaj spertoj pere de Esperanto; spertoj kiujn eĉ oni ne konceptas homoj, kiuj ne estas Esperantistoj; kaj kiuj oni apenaŭ povas priskribi al ne-esperantistoj. Ili tutsimple ne havas la fundamentan komprenon pri kiu temas. Vi kaj mi, mi jam diris, renkontiĝis en diversaj landoj de la mondo, ĉu ne? En Grekujo, en Brazilo, ktp. Vi kaj mi renkontiĝis tie, kun centoj da homoj, kiujn ni renkontis en diversaj partoj de la mondo, kaj kun kiuj ni diskutis kaj babilaĉis kaj drinkis, ktp - en tiu mirinda etoso kaj atmosfero. Mi pensas, ĉu ne, pri mia vivo kaj via vivo. Ni ambaŭ dediĉis nin al tiu movado, kaj el ĝi ni reciproke ĉerpis tiom da feliĉo kaj tiom da inspiro, ĉu ne?"

4. Neĝborulo is one of the few compound words for flora or fauna in Esperanto. The scientific term is galanto. Note that the European robin is a ruĝgorĝo, or scientifically a rubekolo. However, the American robin is a migra turdo, and the Australian one is a ruĝkapa turdo; two quite different birds. You have been warned.

La bone konataj dek ses bazaj reguloj de Esperanto ĉiam mirigas min. Ili estas kunmetitaj kvazaŭ hazarde. Ili estas nekompletaj kaj ne bone priskribas la lingvon. Imagu novan lingvon por kiu la unua regulo diras ke io eĉ ne ekzistas! Kiel artefarita lingvo tiel bone elpensita kiel Esperanto povus havi tiom malbone ordigitajn bazajn regulojn? Venis al mi ebla klarigo: povus esti ke Zamenhof ne multe ŝatis regulojn kaj efektive pensis pri ili nur en la lasta momento. Nun fantazio regas miajn pensojn. La vero malpli gravas ol interesa supozo. En mia imago mi bildigas neokazintan eventon jen:
"Ĉu vi tralegis mian novan libron, Felikso?"
"Jes, Ludoviko, ĝi vere estas mirinda afero - tamen..."
"Tamen?"
"Ludoviko, via lingvo estas tiel bele elpensita, tiel fleksebla, tiel preciza, sed samtempe tiel nuancoriĉa, ke mi ne dubas ke ĝi estos vaste akceptita tuj kiam la mondo ricevos ĝin."

Notes
"We are all imprisoned in the dictionary": English uses the passive more often than many other languages and it is frequently better to find ways of avoiding the passive in Esperanto.
"Paper-walled": several of you chose "papermura", which is acceptable, but to my mind the Eng-lish expression has here a sense of being walled in. I have selected "paper-enfermita" (TN) which gives a non-litera! equivalent.
"Fresh sounds to utter": most of you used either "freŝajn" or "novajn" for "fresh" - either would do. You came up with a variety of solutions for "to utter"; I have opted for TN's compact "eldirendajn".
"Enfranchised words": "enfranchised" encom-passes, I think, both "liberated" and "given proper creden-tials". I am not aware of an Esperanto word which com-bines the two senses, and so it is necessary to make a choice. Most of you selected "liberigitajn", some "rajtigitajn". TN had an imaginative "elkadrigitajn"..
"To give vent": the little word "to" carries a great deal of force here - far more than that of a mere infinitive. it conveys the sense of a desire that something could be done. Most of you succeeded in flnding Esperanto expres-sions vvhich reflected this. For "give vent", one or two of you used simply the verb "eligi", but I am not sure that this quite gives the flavour of the English, which is pretty flow-ery. Among other translations - all acceptable - were "doni spiron", "doni vivon", "aperigi" and "elbuŝigi". I have opted for CB's "doni liberon" which picks up the metaphor of imprisonment which runs through the whole passage.

Edith Sheldrick enlisted the aid of a M.E.P. when she lost her handbag during a visit to the European Commission headquarters in Brussels whilst taken part in the European Esperanto Congress in Ostend last summer. It took 8 months for the handbag to be reunited with Edith back in Barnoldswick, Lancashire. Quite a lot of editorial space in the local papers resulted. What our members will do to produce publicity for Esperanto!

A LATE SUMMER HOLIDAY IN MALTA
Members Jane and Brian Rayner write to tell of a very pleasant holiday to be had in Malta (the George Cross. Island for those with long memories) The Malta Esperanto Society has arranged the La Oka Internacia Turisma Semajno will take place 2nd to 8th September 2001. The cost for six nights of half-board and many excursions is 145 Maltese liros (equals about £217). Leaflet available from the office. Arthur Sly is going and would be happy to join up with others.
