It is a painful sight I cannot bear,
when fire, the ruthless element whose blaze
consumes and swallows, in the final phase
withers to ashes grey as strumpet's hair.Nor pains it less to see the farm-yard, where
the straw once juicy from the summer's rays
turns slowly yellow in autumnal days,
and waits the hail that strikes and does not spare.O tragedy when something starts to fade!
Philosophy provides no balm nor aid.
Life does not pause while individuals die.Power leaks away, strength knows no more its own,
matters decays, elastic loses tone,
each effort fails, and every dream's a lie.
Tradukis D. B. Gregor
Al mi ne plaĉas vidi, kiel fajro,
brulinte senkompate, konsuminte
dum ciklas viv', individuoj mortas;potenc' likiĝas for, febliĝas fortoj,
ŝimas la ŝtof', rompiĝas la risortoj,
vanas la revoj, ĉia streb' abortas.
William Auld
